An equalization curve exactly the inverse of the one stored on a particular record; the combination of the two curves yields a flat output signal. It boosts the lows below 500 Hz and maintains a flat response between 500 Hz to 2121 Hz, where it falls off with a -6 dB slope. Records could have been made without pre-equalizing them, but at the cost of a greatly reduced playing time and a worse signal to noise ratio. The RIAA equalization can be achieved passively or actively through a frequency selective feedback loop.
